Services

Our objective at Custer McDermott Animal Hospital is to offer the highest quality veterinary health care for our patients with compassionate, friendly, and timely service for our clients.  We focus on quality and safety in patient procedures and treatments.  We emphasize client education, disease prevention, and early recognition of health care problems.  We offer a wide range of veterinary services to keep your companions feeling their best.

New puppy and kitten exams/consultations:  We schedule a consultation with a technician to gather information about your new puppy or kitten and to discuss general puppy and kitten care.  After consultation with a technician, a veterinarian will thoroughly examin your new family member and make recomendations to keep them healthy.  Plan one hour to allow us to examin your new puppy or kitten, completely answer all your questions, and to get you the start you need.

Annual exams/wellness visits:  Regular wellness examinations allow us to thoroughly examin your dog or cat and to screen for problems you may not be aware are present.  This is also a time for us to discuss your pet's lifestyle and determine what we can do to keep him/her healthy.  Vaccination requirments and options will be discussed so you and your veterinarian can determine what is best for your pet.  Wellness evaluation often includes parasite screening and wellness testing to detect problems early before symptoms of illness develop.

Individualized Parasite Control Programs:  Parasites are prevalent in Texas and can be a significant health risk for your pet.  Not only are parasites unhealthy for your dog or cat, but some of the parasites that infest dogs and cats can cause serious medical problems for exposed people.  We will discuss the parasites that are a risk for your pet and you and make recommendations on how to prevent infestation.  There are many very good parasite prevention products available.  We will help you choose ther right product(s) to protect you and your pet.

For more information about important parasites visit The Companion Animal Parasite Council.

Anesthesia:  We utilize a combination of the safest available anesthetics to provide a safe and comfortable anesthestic experience for all our patients.  We routinely recommend pre-anesthetic bloodwork for all patients to assess organ function and blood cell counts.  Pre-anesthetic testing along with physical exam allows us to estimate anesthetic and surgical risk.  Most patients will have an IV catheter and receive intravenous fluids during anesthesia.  Multiple monitors including pulse oximeter to monitor heart rate and oxygen saturation, electrocardiogram to monitor heart rate and rhythm, respiratory monitor, temperature, and blood pressure are available to be used to increase safety while under anesthesia. For more information regarding pre-anesthetic evaluation and testing see Surgical FAQs.

Surgical Services:  Our veterinarians routinely perform general surgery.  For some procedures we utilize a traveling veterinary surgeon who will come to Custer McDermott Animal Hospital to provide an additional level of expertise and the convenience of our facility.  For complicated or special surgical procedures we routinely refer our patients to the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center.  Through a strong relationship and communication with the boarded surgeons of the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center, we are able to offer you and your pet all available surgical options.

Dentistry:  Many dogs and cats are afflicted by periodontal disease even at young ages.  The veterinarians at Custer McDermott Animal Hospital have a special interest in veterinary dentistry and have received additional training to care for dental problems in your pet.  We are very proactive in making assessments and recommendations to improve the oral health and overall quality of life of our patients.  Our dental services include oral cavity assessment, teeth cleaning and polishing, dental X-rays, periodontal treatment, extractions, and minor oral surgery.  We also regularly communicate with and refer patients to a local board certified veterinary dentist for specialized procedures including root canals and complicated oral surgery.

Dietary Counseling:  We provide guidance regarding your pets' nutritional needs for each life stage, including growth, weight maintenance and performance.  Many dogs and cats are overweight and need a plan for weight loss to avoid the serious harmful effects of obesity.  There are many high quality prescription diets we can recommend.  We also carry several prescription diets and will recommned when they should be considered.
