EPA Announces Increased Scrutiny of Topical Flea and Tick Control Products

A recent increase in the number of adverse reactions to spot-on flea and tick products reported in 2008 prompted the Environmental Protection Agency to announce in April 2009 that it is stepping up its evaluation of these products.  The EPA has not recommended discontinuing appropriate use of topical flea and tick control products.  They are recommending people carefully follow label directions and monitor their pets for any signs of an adverse reaction after application, particularly when using these products for the first time. Also, before use of these products on weak, aged, medicated, sick, pregnant or nursing pets, or on pets that have previously shown signs of sensitivity to pesticide products, EPA recommends that a veterinarian be consulted.

A list of products the EPA monitors can be downloaded here: EPA List

At Custer McDermott Animal Hospital we recommend the following topical flea control products:

Revolution

Revolution is an FDA approved prescription topical heartworm and flea prevention.  It is not a pesticide regulated by EPA, and is therefore not on the list.

Frontline Top Spot

Frontline Top Spot is an EPA regulated topical pesticide for treatment and prevention of fleas and ticks.  As it is regulated by EPA, it is on the list.  We have used and recommeded Frontline Top Spot since opening Custer McDermott Animal Hospital nearly ten years ago.  We have never reported an adverse effect associated with its use in our patients.  We will continue to monitor EPA's increased surveillance of all topical products and keep you informed as best we can.  We feel very comfortable recommending Frontline Top Spot as a safe and effective measure for controlling fleas and ticks on our patients.
